Brief Introduction:

The School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering (NAOCE) was founded on December 17th, 2003, which combined the former School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering with the School of Civil Engineering & Mechanics. The newly founded School includes six first-degree disciplines. They are: Naval Architectures and Ocean Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Architecture, International Shipping Administration and Harbor, Coastal Engineering. The School presently has six undergraduate programs, nineteen master’s degree programs, three professional master’s degree programs and twelve doctor’s degree programs. There are State Key Lab of Ocean Engineering, two Post-doctor stations, i.e., Engineering Mechanics and Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering, and two National Key Disciplines, namely, the design & Construction of Ship & Offshore Structures and Engineering Mechanics. The Disciplines of Fluid Mechanics and General Mechanics, which are the key disciplines in Shanghai, are also the members of State Key Laboratory of Vibration, Shock & Noise.


The Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Postdoctor Research Station is set up in the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and civil Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering has a first-level discipline which belongs to the first group of national level key disciplines. In the 2003 and 2009’s first-level discipline evaluation by Ministry of Education, our discipline are ranked first among all universities in China.

The discipline of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering is mainly composed of three sub-subjects: ship and ocean engineering structures design and construction, marine engineering and hydro-acoustics engineering. The State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering consists of ocean engineering basin, ship model towing tank, cavitation tunnel, underwater engineering basin, structure dynamic loading system and CAD/CAM laboratory. Meanwhile, there are six research institutes, ie Ship and ocean engineering structures design institute, Underwater engineering institute, Structural mechanics institute, Hydrodynamics institute, Marine power plant and automation institute and New type of ships and ocean engineering structures R&D institute.

As one of the most time-honored disciplines in Shanghai Jiaotong University, many major research facilities have been built firstly in China, tremendous achievements have been made and high academic Reputation has been established during the development of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. By long-term construction and development, at present the discipline of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering has superior research domains: ship and ocean engineering structures design and construction, Ship Mechanics, ocean engineering, underwater construction, Marine Engineering and Underwater detection technology.

Our discipline has six members of "Thousand Talents Program" of China, three Specially-appointed Professors and two Chair professors of Changjiang Scholars Programme of China, two Distinguished Young Scholars of National Science Foundation, one Innovative Research Team of the Ministry of Education of China, more than ten professors have held important positions in international academic organization. At present an academic team with high academic level has been established led by academician, specially-appointed professors of Changjiang Scholars Programme and other professors.


The Stake Key Laboratory and deep water laboratory of our discipline have formed a group of important basic laboratory facilities. In the end of 2006, the construction to the state key laboratory of ocean engineering was carried out by Shanghai Jiaotong University, which is supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology. And in the end of 2008, the National Laboratory became the first group for national innovation base for senior personnel from overseas.

Our discipline has developed cooperations with famous universities and institutions abroad, such as Marin research center, Texas A&M university, Yokohama National University, held many international conferences, such as OMAE in 2010, and undertaken more than ten International Cooperation projects.

The School of NAOCE also has established cooperations with many organizations, such as ship design units, research centers and shipyards in China and provided for corresponding postdoctor stations of companies and research institutions to be affiliated to NAOE Postdoctor Station.

In order to meet the requirement of ship industry development and the exploitation of sea oil/gas and mining, SNAOCE conducts investigations in various aspects such as basic research, fundamental application research in the fields of hydrodynamics, structural mechanics and the engineering technological development. SNAOCE also pays great attention to carry out vital research projects by state, ministries and industrial organizations. The research scope covers main aspects such as commercial and ministary ships, exploitation of offshore oil and gas, coastal and port engineering, sea environment and protection etc.

NAOE Postdoctor Research Station provides opportunities for young doctors to pursue their innovational research work independently for two years.

Brief Introduction of Director of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering

Prof. Liu Cungen, also a Ph.D. supervisor, was born in 1958. He received his bachelor degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1982. Later on he got his PhD degree in 1996 also from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He has been appointed as the deputy director of Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2006. He is now also serving as the deputy secretary of Shanghai Shipbuilding Industry Association, a senior member of the Academic Committee of the Shipbuilding Process of the Chinese Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers(CSNAME) and the deputy leader of Computer Science and Applications Subgroup of CSNAME,.

He is engaged in teaching and researching of ship design and manufacture. His research interests are now focusing on Ship Design, which includes ship design method, hull form optimization, ship intelligent design, and Shipbuilding Technology, such as virtual shipbuilding technology, shipyard production process simulation, hull construction engineering methods, curved hull plate forming by line-heating.

He was in charge of several basic research and national key research projects:

·         Two subprojects of Digital Intelligent Design System of Shipbuilding – the Hull Precision Control and the Production Management;

·         National Key Innovation Project Computer-aided System for Hull Plate Forming by Line-heating;

·         State Key Laboratory Project Development of an Intelligent Robot for large Curvature Hull Plate Forming.

·         Several ship design projects, such as 82m Heavy Deck Cargo Ship and South China Sea God Antique Boat.

He also participated in a number of key research projects, such as 863 Key Program, Simulation Operation System of Deepwater Offshore Platform; two Ministry of Science and Technology Project, Strategic Study on Speeding up the Development of Innovation Ability of Shipbuilding industry, and Study of Strategy of Shipbuilding Development and Technology Progress of Four Provinces; National Innovation Project, Integrated Shipbuilding Technology; NSF Program, Study of Modular Construction Technology and Virtual Technology of Shipbuilding.

He made an important breakthrough in automatically forming the curved hull plate. He has published more than 40 papers. He also received one Second Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award and four Third Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award.
